berkeley marine recruiters story update

***
ANOTHER OF THOSE, "WE MEANT NO OFFENSE, BUT IF ANYONE WAS INADVERTENTLY OFFENDED...

Here’s an update on my Berkeley Marine Recruiting Center post from yesterday.

Responding to heat from an avalanche of emails, nationwide criticism, and the potential loss of taxpayer funding for local projects, the mayor of Berkeley has decided to apologize for the city’s hard-line stance in a letter drawn up against local Marine recruiters recently. The letter, he said, will probably be withdrawn and another more moderate one drawn up.

The letter said that the Center “was not welcome on Shattuck Avenue and that the Marines were uninvited and unwelcome intruders.”

Mayor Tom Mates said the city didn't mean to offend anyone in the armed forces. Right. Politicians can be just so slippery and slimy with their words.

I'll translate. The mayor and City Council welcome military personnel, as long as they aren’t doing their job, especially during a Republican administration.

I wonder how much the mayor and his fellow liberals in Berkeley protested when Bill Clinton violated the US Constitution, bypassed Congress and the United Nations, then got the NATO countries to go along with the 78-day bombing of Serbia in 1999 during the Monica Lewinsky debacle?

It’s not over but other voices are now being heard. On the anti-military side, Code Pink protestors plan to be at the next meeting and they are boiling mad.

"I was under the impression that we have the right of free speech," said Xanne Joi of Code Pink. "To me, I thought free speech meant you get to say what you want without recrimination."

No Xanne, that’s not what free speech means at all. Ask anyone who happens to say something sarcastic, funny, insulting, or insensitive about individuals or groups you support, and then has to brace up against the onslaught of radicals like you who demand they be fried, fired, ostracized, strung up, or otherwise punished and humiliated in the public arena.

If you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen … oops, no offense meant ladies.

"We have gone forth from our shores repeatedly over the last hundred years, and we’ve done this as recently as the last year in Afghanistan and put wonderful young men and women at risk, many of whom have lost their lives, and we have asked for nothing except enough ground to bury them in, and otherwise we have returned home to seek our own lives in peace." - Colin Powell, January, 2003

This is the story of a boy named Ted
If his mother said, "Teddy be good"
He would (alright)
She told him tales about his soldier daddy
But it made her sad, and she cried, oh My!
Teddy used to tell her he'd be twice as good
And he knew he could
