IT'S BEEN A WHILE SINCE I'VE POSTED ONE OF MY POEMS ...
SO, BY 'UNPOPULAR' REQUEST

Pick Up Sticks

Autumn puts me into a special mood, sends me to often forgotten but familiar places

Across a bridge between new endings and old beginnings

Well-traveled territory but fewer distractions

A cool sun’s gently caressing fingers

Stir quietly through a vaporous sea of blue

A quiet that speaks eloquently, with fluency

No rumble of trucks, no heavenly transgressions

My skin tingles and my ears are abuzz

A time for getting close to things, embracing solitude

I pick up scraps of paper and dry twigs nestled in the cool grass

Apologize for wresting them from their place of rest

Down on my knees I caress my dear old friend with whom I’ve shared

So many autumn days, and summer days, fields of dreams and screams

A boy's joy springing forth

Tumbling through my heart and across empty lots

We seem as one in these increasingly shortened days

I feel drawn to you, no surprise, from you I came

And stardust too, both we have and will certainly go

I wonder how many times before, and hence?

You lift me up, sometimes tickling the soles of me feet

You're so funny ... if sometimes unforgiving.

Still, I get all good things from you

Is it just a stroke of luck that I (and you) are here?

Are we both more than an afterthought?

I often wonder

It’s been a long time since someone tucked me in

Said what a good boy am I

It takes courage to say what you know is true out loud.
- Ed, 1988

I should go back and do some re-writes but sometimes first impressions ring more true.
