'just the facts, ma'am'

***
I'VE ALWAYS BEEN ONE WHO SOUGHT AFTER THE TRUTH, SAW THE PROBLEMS CREATED BY THOSE WHO HIDE IT, BUT NEVER SO AS TODAY

So when I was a child and saw Joe Friday interrupt someone with, "Just the facts, ma'am" I only thought that was being impatient... after all, I'm a natural born story-teller, only I let people know when it's fiction.

When my mother said, "Don't lie ... I can't stand a liar" I only thought he said that because lying was a sin and not because of the destructive consequences.

When I had my second real job at a newspaper and was given a really dirty job (straightening up the "morgue") when things were slow, and the manager sent someone in on the fifth day to help me finish so that the owner and editor could see the transformation, I stood flabbergasted as they shook HIS hand and told him what a great job HE'D done.

I waited for him to say, "Oh, I just got here an hour ago. 'ED' did all this work."

He didn't ... he just smiled that big fake flashy smile of his and walked off to lunch behind them.

He lied ... without saying a word.

Life is full of little episodes like that ... isn't it?

It teaches us a lot. Or it can.

Some learn the wrong lessons.

For me, it's hard enough to think back and feel remorse for all the bad behavior of my youth and later life, all the sins of commission and omisission, so why add to my troubles in a time where people should have accumulated some wisdom by lying?

And especially if something can only be gotten by lying (or not being truthful) ... if it takes lying then i don't want it.

At this point in my life, I try to be quiet when i have nothing to say, and when I do, or should, I try my best to speak from knowledge, an understanding of facts, and experiences.

As George Orwell famously said, "In a time of universal deceit - telling the truth is a revolutionary act."

All I've ever done is tell the truth when i think it needs to be told, and that has many many times got me into trouble and/or made me a very unpopular person.

I kind of like that. I wear it as a badge of honor. Those who know me love me. And those who do simply because I tell the truth can go pound sand.
