I measure out my life in rusty nails...

Sorry for another boring post but the majority of my productive waking time for the foreseeable future will be in repairing my house from the ravages of Katrina. Current cost of project for materials and tools... $88.29

Today I removed a 8 foot by 5 foot section of damaged roof. I cut out the remaining upper plates on one side of my utility room and replaced them with new 2x4's. I then pried off the three 5 foot 2x6 joists and the 8 foot rafter they were attached to. Then I put in a new 2X6 rafter, tied in one new joist to replaced the damaged one and re-nailed the other two joists which were fine.

Doesn't sound like much, does it? It is. Oh well, a few square feet here and there and in a few months I'll be back better than before. I may have to replace three or four other rafters in my utility room... I'll see. No telling what I'll find when I start over my guest rooms. I'd like to save as much good wood as I can and only replace what is really damaged. Probably 80 to 90% of repairs are labor so I'm still saving mucho dinero doing this stuff myself. They don't make good wood like they used to and everything is so expensive. Some of the cheap stuff they sell was once considered usable only for box crates and stuff---remember those?

Anyway, I then spent an hour or so trying to tighten up the blue tarps I installed myself---the ones FEMA put up on my main structure are very professionally done. I put mine up alone in a stiff wind with few materials. Hopefully, any rain we get will be minimal to moderate.

It's after 5 and I still haven't eaten yet. Just had a cup of joe when I got up. My blisters and bruises are starting to pile up. A hot bath was very soothing... think I'll have an Aleve and a lemonade. I'm frying some hot sausage to make a hot sausage po-boy with cheese---dressed---as we say in NOLA. Some frozen Ora Ida crinkle-cut fries too---another guilty pleasure. No girly-men food for this roughneck!

Oh, BTW---If you love animals, especially dogs, PULEEZE, my friend aspoor has a precious bull terrier (hey Schnitzel!) entered in an on-line dog show. April would appreciate you considering voting for her dog. To vote, I think you can go here:

LSU's on...gotta go...it's a guy thing. (Yikes---Georgia just went up 14-0!
