foggy memories and honky-tonk dreams

***
I SWEAR IT'S TRUE - FUNNY ISN'T IT?
HOW A FEW HOURS CAN HAUNT YOUR DREAMS

***

Wild Strawberries and Shame

I’ve seen you often
more than a hundred times now
kicking off boots in blue denim dreams
swimming in a silent rushing wave of green
a skip past my shadow
dissolving into an electric scream
barefoot on cold concrete
as streetlights shimmer then fade
before a more powerful energy
still light and fleeting on tip-toes
always whispering another name.

If the Fun House was a refuge
on Magazine Street
the first and last call after
wild strawberries and shame
honky tonk my benediction
the service sweet and sticky
lasting long into the night
no cowboy talk of life and death there
just morning cloudy with a chance
of neon rainbow dreams and drifting
smoking apparitions across the dance floor.

Your eyes met mine in that moment
chin holding a mocking laugh
golden hair swept back
into a polished black-bone horsehair clip
I heard you singing sweetly
inside your perfumed cloud
another name
never did get the accent
just one dance on tip-toes
cheek to cheek
steel guitars crying
beer-stained coasters drying
at the bar.

Here comes my baby, here she comes now,
and it comes as no surprise for me
with another guy
Well here comes my baby, here she comes now
Walking with her love, with her love, that's oh-so fine
never to be mine, no matter how I try

Thanks Eileen. I'm glad you like it. Can you tell if it's based on something real or not?
