poems on the fly ... one for the year's end

Before everyone is too busy with other things, I jotted down a quick bit of verse that hopefully reflects a little of what I think of my friends on LJ.

I have 20 active friends, I think, and as I went down the list I wrote a single line reflecting one tiny aspect of how I see each person and what he or she means to me.

Of course I can't begin to describe each person properly and completely, but I think the sum total of all of these words at least begins to represent who and what you all are to me. On the other hand, some of you may feel I wrote this poem just for you:

My Friends

From twinkling stardust came you and I
Out of the shadows of a new dawn sky
Silly temper tantrums aside ... so lovable you
Delighting in your penchant for all things horrible
Distance and time have never really mattered
As we met in the light of a flickering screen
Swapped our tears, and stories, and dreams smiling
Ever so warm in our differences and sameness
You taught me many things marvelous and exotic
We became real friends, and touched each others heart
I watched in awe as you spun your tales
Tried to tickle your funny bone, and tweak your nose with mine
I just can never get enough of you
Am always happy in your joy and hurting in your pain
As I watch you struggle courageously to make your way
Clothed in all your strengths and weaknesses … beautiful!
So much stronger than me are you
And magical too … you send me flying
Wishing you only lovely things as I soar
My only wish for me that I'd known you sooner
Though I feel I have known you all my life.

Until later again ... I hope it's been as nice a year for you as it's been for me.

Always a joy and a pleasure to read your updates. You have certainly been one of the better lights of the past year... Looking forward to the next...

Peace, cheers and Happy New Year...

That's a very nice thing to say and I appreciate it Mike. The feelings are, of course, mutual.

This one is about me, isn't it?

Nope ... but I'm amazed at how many lines apply to multiple people. Maybe there's only one type who can out up with me.

I rather suspect that my friends, much as Amanda's telephone-man husband in The Glass Menagerie, have fallen in love with long-distance. :D

put up, that is ... although there are exceptions.

Aren't you sweet to say so. Thanks Marlene! I'm glad you liked it.

You know you have a way with words, Shoji-kun. Y'know, one of the highlights of my year has been making new friends like yourself. Have a fun & happy New Year's, my dear, & I wish you all the best in the year to come. :)

What a wonderful poem! Thank you for sharing with us. I love reading your writing, and can't even begin to guess which line is mine. :)

Thanks Katharine. Looking back on it later, it does seem kind of nice ... but I'm not telling who goes where no matter how many hints I receive. Like I told Jeff, there does seem to be a lot of lines that apply to several of my friends anyway. :D

I was thinking that, too. Not only for me, but for Judith, Jeff, and Eileen, at least. We're both so lucky to have such great friends, don't you think?

Oh, absolutely, very lucky and very blessed. In "real life" we might occasionally want to tear each others eyes out from time to time, but I think we would still be great friends. Actually, we might belong in a sit-com together but no one would believe it. :)

very beautiful and Ian would say very bootiful. LOL
I love reading your stuff Ed. You were such a great part of 2006. I look forward to this year! :D

Awwww ... you always make me feel so good. Of course there's a line in there about Ian too since he's on my friends' list. :)

You know, I see poetry in almost everything, especially written words. Maybe one day I'll put together some lines from the comments my friends make. That might be fun.

Yes. Last year was amazing for me. I mentioned to a couple of people how our exchanges really helped me get through some awful times. Not that I need a disaster to have friendships, but it's nice to have them to share all the good times and bad and hopefully make a difference. You've done that for me.
