can't they let us pee in peace?

Oh, you've heard of it by now. The state of New Mexico has installed urinal cakes that deliver a message warning men of the danger of drunken driving. Five hundred of them at road stop restrooms at $21 apiece.

The cakes have sensors to detect an approaching male and the voice is that of a flirty woman who advises anyone who steps up that, "Your future is in your hand".

I would like to officially declare that I am offended. It is sexist, engages in profiling, invasion of privacy, humiliation, spying, encourages theft, tacky, and puts men with weak hearts at risk. Of course it is discriminatory because it only addresses English-speaking males (as far as I know, there are no urinals in the ladies' room).

What's next, TALKING HEADS? Maybe a weight-sensitive one? A husky male voice declaring, "Hey baby! Been hittin' the Reeses Peanut Butter Cups a little hard lately? I won't even get into the gay-straight issues involved. Do I see class action suits a-head? Are you women going to stand for that?

Anybody out there as P***** off outraged as I am?

ED SAID IT: Countries like Russia and China have really strict environmental laws. It's against the law, for example, to throw a cigarette into their rivers. Of course that's because they might catch fire.

Click here for a little Mardi Gras music:

My flagboy and your flagboy, sittin by the fire,

My flagboy told your flagboy,

I'm going to set your flag on fire,

Takin bout ..... hey now, hey now

Iko! Iko! an de'

Yes, I heard about that on the news the other day. That is definitely government going too far.

I wonder what Xeenie would say?
Feb. 16th, 2007 08:19 pm (UTC)
Maybe she would agree?

You know what a bad and bawdy babe she is. I think she'd suggest we consider starting a movement.

No sh*t?

I wouldn't stand for that if I were you.

Seriously, I can't get that worked up about it--not just because it doesn't affect me directly, but because women have to deal with a lot worse--hidden cameras in toilets, locker rooms, upskirt voyeurism (yes, the woman is choosing to wear a short skirt, and whether or not she also chooses to wear anything under it is up to her, but that doesn't mean she wants to be photographed unawares.) In light of that, a mere message, offensive it may be, is not that bad. Which is not to say it's right, either.

Although I'm sure you realize my outrage was primarily expressed with tongue and cheek, I do lament each new loss of civility and propriety, each new incursion of tackiness and bad taste. And, yes, I agree ... women have had to endure way too much creepiness in immature, sometimes disturbing, male behavior. Being someone who may sometimes come across as a bit too playful, I hope you know that I have the utmost respect and admiration for the female species, and most assuredly yourself.

I hope your first week in your new position was enjoyable. :)

I read your post once, and then logged out and thought about my little comments here, and then decided to re-log in and post them (I was also at work this morning, so couldn't just sit with LJ open for awhile). By then you had explained to someone else that your comments were tongue-in-cheek, but I semi-fired up and had to express myself, so there it is.

Enjoyable first week? No, not really, as I'm still doing the old one, and will be for the foreseeable future. But it wasn't necessarily bad, either. I felt a bit snowed under, which was appropriate given the weather outside. But "my" students are definitely showing me respect, and I even had to have my first "chat" with one of them--swearing in front of patrons and where the brass might hear = not cool. They were mild expletives, and the patron didn't seem to mind, but still. Had to nip that in the bud. Whee!

Can't argue with that.

Wait! Wait! Wait just a minute; "you're future is in your hands" is supposed to be an DUI message???!!!! Are they nuts???!! Come on now, considering what the man is holding while this is being broadcast, I would thing the last thing on his mind would be a DUI. This is just plain ridiculous. I really have to laugh to stop from crying. Urgh.

Hee hee hee! Of course my post and accompanying outrage were done with tongue firmly planted in cheek. The message does include a few admonitions about drinking. Although my comments were a little over the top, I still think it's silly and a waste of taxpayers' money.

I had to work tonight so I'm still awake; and, yes, it is indeed a waste of taxpayers' money. Like those messages will make a difference. Urgh. I agree with what Xenee said above. Though I did understand your tounge-in-cheek. ;) I'm tired, and working too many nights; although if the person they hired to help me hadn't have lied to the owner (a few times) I wouldn't have been as tired. I'll post more about that tomorrow.
